Reset Routine After Mistakes
Recover from a mistake, missed opportunity, or bad call without letting one moment become the next two.
Who this helps
- Athletes who spiral after a single mistake
- Athletes who get frustrated with themselves or officials
- Athletes who fear letting teammates down
- Coaches who want a shared reset language
Why it matters
Pressure does not create new problems. It exposes old ones. One mistake is rarely the real issue — the bigger issue is what the athlete does with attention after the mistake.
A reset routine gives the athlete a trained response. Instead of replaying the error or forcing a correction, the athlete acknowledges the moment, releases it, and returns attention to the next useful action.
Starter exercise — 5-second reset
- Recognize: say internally, "That happened."
- Release: one physical reset — wipe the hands, tap the chest, or step to a reset spot.
- Reframe: say "Next action," then look up and execute.
