    Why it matters

Most athletes do not lose focus because they do not care. They lose focus because their attention has no assignment. Before competition, the mind looks for something to grab onto — and if nothing has been trained, attention drifts toward fear, outcome, or judgment.

A lock-in routine gives the athlete a repeatable way to breathe, reset, and choose the first controllable action. The goal is not to feel perfect. The goal is to be ready enough to compete on purpose.

    Starter exercise — 60-second lock-in

    1. Breathe: inhale 4 seconds through the nose, hold 2, exhale 6. Repeat three times.
    2. Choose one cue word for the start of competition (attack, calm, compete, ready).
    3. Name one controllable first action you can execute in the first two minutes.
