P3 Thinking: A Simple Filter For Game-Day Focus

Not every thought deserves attention. P3 is the filter — Purposeful, Productive, Positive.

Athletes don't lose focus because they think too much. They lose focus because they listen to every thought equally.

P3 is a filter. Purposeful. Productive. Positive. Three questions that decide which thoughts get attention.

    Why It Matters In Competition

The mind is going to talk. The job isn't silence — it's selection. P3 gives athletes a way to decide which thoughts move them forward and which thoughts get cut.

    The Three Questions

Run every thought through these three filters:

    • Is this thought useful right now?
    • Does it help me execute the next play?
    • Does it move me toward the response I want?

    The IBE Approach

P3 is not positive thinking. It is purposeful thinking. The goal is execution, not optimism.

    Action Steps

    Install P3 this week:

    • Pick one moment in practice — water break, sub line, possession reset — and run P3.
    • Catch one unhelpful thought per session and re-route it with the filter.
    • Pair P3 with a cue word so the filter triggers automatically.
