Game-Day Mental Preparation
How to Build a Pre-Game Routine That Holds Up Under Pressure
A pre-game routine isn't superstition. It's a sequence that gets you into your first rep ready — on purpose, every time.
The first five minutes of a game are decided by what you did in the hour before it. A pre-game routine isn't superstition — it's a trainable sequence that regulates arousal, locks attention, and walks you onto the field already in your first rep.
Built right, it works in any sport, at any level, on any day.
Why A Routine Beats Hype
Hype spikes you and crashes you. A routine puts you in the arousal zone where execution is sharpest — focused, calm, ready. Hype is loud. Routine is repeatable.
The Four Blocks Of A Pre-Game Routine
Time them backward from kickoff. Each block has a job.
- 60–45 min out — Body prep. Movement, fueling, music that regulates instead of overheats.
- 45–20 min out — Mental rehearsal. Visualize the first three reads, the first three reps, the first response if it goes sideways.
- 20–5 min out — Cue and breath. One cue word. One breath pattern. Lock the target.
- 5–0 min out — First-rep walk-in. Step onto the field already in the rep.
Install One Cue And One Breath
Pick the same cue word and breath pattern every game. They are anchors. The body learns that when these two run, it's go time. Improvise everything else.
Plan The Reset Inside The Routine
A routine without a reset breaks the first time something goes wrong — a delayed start, a bad warm-up rep, a coach changing the plan. Build a 30-second reset block you can run mid-routine without losing the sequence.
The IBE Approach
Execution is one of the six skills the IBE Scorecard measures. If your gap is starting slow, leaking attention pre-game, or burning out before tipoff, your Full Profile will show it and your Review With Your coach will give you the specific routine to install first.
