Team Mental Standards
A preview of the IBE team standards framework — shared language for mistakes, pressure, communication, and response.
Who this helps
- Teams that respond inconsistently to adversity
- Coaches installing standards before the season
- Captains who need shared language
- Programs working to reduce blame after mistakes
Why it matters
Teams do not rise to slogans. They rise to trained standards. Without shared language for pressure, every athlete responds differently when adversity hits — some shut down, some blame, some force plays.
Team Mental Standards gives coaches and leaders a common operating language so response becomes predictable. When mistakes happen, the team knows what to say, what to do, and how to reconnect.
Starter exercise — define one team standard
- Finish this sentence as a team: "When pressure rises, our team ______."
- Agree on one phrase teammates will say after mistakes.
- Choose one reset behavior the team will run after momentum swings.
